Glasgow and Edinburgh: festive days out close to home
Closest to home, Glasgow City Council has announced a new look Christmas for 2026. The Christmas market returns to St Enoch Square in the first week of November with international food, the Big Wheel and free entertainment. George Square is back as a centrepiece after its multi million pound transformation, with a new Christmas village opening in late November, and the Winter Wonderland returns to Glasgow Green later in the month with an ice rink, a Festive Big Top, rides and Santa’s Grotto.
For groups from East Kilbride, Hamilton, Motherwell or anywhere across Lanarkshire, Glasgow is a short hop. A coach takes city centre parking out of the equation and means the whole group arrives together and heads home together, which counts for a lot on a busy December evening.
A little further east, Edinburgh’s Christmas runs from 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with the Traditional Christmas Market in East Princes Street Gardens beside the Scott Monument. The market is free to enter, which suits mixed groups where not everyone wants to pay for rides. At around 46 miles from East Kilbride, it makes a comfortable day trip, and you can stay into the evening when the gardens are lit up.

Heading south: Newcastle, York, Manchester and Birmingham
If your group fancies something different, the big English markets are all within reach with UK wide coach rental from Glasgow. Here is what each one offers this year.
Newcastle Christmas Market runs from 19 November to 23 December 2026, centred on Grey’s Monument with stalls along Grey Street, Grainger Street and Nelson Street. At roughly 146 miles from East Kilbride, it is the nearest of the English options and works well as a long day out.
York Christmas Market runs from 12 November to 21 December 2026, with alpine chalets on Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square. One detail catches people out: the market closes every Tuesday for a weekly rest day, so build your plans around that. York is about 207 miles away, and adding a night in the city gives your group time to see the Minster and the Shambles without watching the clock.
Manchester Christmas Markets open on Friday 6 November and run until Tuesday 22 December 2026, spread across ten city centre locations. Albert Square and Cathedral Gardens keep going until 3 January 2027, which makes Manchester one of the few choices for a trip between Christmas and New Year. At around 211 miles from East Kilbride, most groups find it more relaxed as an overnight.
Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market runs from 5 November to 24 December 2026, stretching from Victoria Square down New Street with more than 80 Bavarian style stalls. At about 287 miles from East Kilbride, this is one to plan as an overnight or a short break rather than a day out.

Day trip or overnight? How drivers’ hours shape your plans
Coach drivers work to strict legal limits, and those limits decide whether a market works as a day trip. Under the drivers’ hours rules that apply to private hire coaches, a driver can normally drive for up to 9 hours in a day, which can be extended to 10 hours twice a week, and must take breaks totalling at least 45 minutes after no more than four and a half hours behind the wheel.
In practice, Glasgow and Edinburgh are straightforward day trips. Newcastle fits into a long but manageable day. Manchester and York sit close to what a single day allows once you add breaks, traffic and a decent amount of time at the market, which is why many groups turn them into an overnight stay. Birmingham, at nearly 300 miles each way, is an overnight trip. When you get in touch, we will work through the timings with you so the plan is legal, realistic and leaves plenty of time at the stalls.
Why a coach makes more sense than the train
Trains are fine for two people. For a group of 20, 40 or 70, a coach wins on almost every count.
You travel from your own doorstep. We pick up from your workplace, club, church or community centre, so nobody has to make their own way into Glasgow Central or Queen Street first.
There is room for the shopping. Our Yutong GT12 has 8.5 cubic metres of luggage hold space, so overnight bags and armfuls of gifts go underneath rather than on your knee.
The long run home is comfortable. Our larger coaches come with reclining seats, USB charging and an onboard toilet, so the journey down the M74 and back becomes part of the day rather than something to endure.
Everyone travels together. Nobody gets lost between platforms, and nobody misses the last train home after one more mulled wine.
Safety comes as standard. Every seat has a seatbelt and our drivers are PVG checked, which matters for church groups, schools and community groups bringing younger members along. Our fleet runs from a 19 seat executive midi coach up to a 74 seat coach, with 53 and 55 seat coaches in between. Tell us your numbers and we will match the vehicle to your group.

Planning tips for a smooth Christmas market trip
Book early for December weekends. Saturdays in late November and December are also popular nights for office parties. So if you are organising a works night out as well, our guide to Christmas party coach hire covers that side of the season.
Check the closing days before you settle on a date. York closes on Tuesdays, and most markets finish before Christmas. Edinburgh and parts of Manchester the main exceptions running into January.
Agree a meeting point and a firm departure time at the coach before everyone disappears into the crowds. A quick headcount on the way out saves a lot of phone calls later.
Dress for December. Layers, a waterproof and comfortable shoes make a long day on your feet far more enjoyable, wherever you are heading.
Think about accessibility early. If anyone in your group uses a wheelchair, our accessible coach hire options include a PSVAR compliant coach with a wheelchair lift.
Fancy making a proper break of it? Our luxury touring coach hire can combine a market or two with a few days of sightseeing.

If your plans are still loose, get in touch with a rough headcount and a preferred weekend and we can talk through the options.
It is possible, but it makes for a long day. Manchester is around 211 miles from East Kilbride by road, and drivers’ hours rules limit how long a driver can spend behind the wheel in one day. Many groups find an overnight stay far more relaxed. We will talk you through the timings for your date when you ask for a quote.
Glasgow’s market in St Enoch Square is the closest, at around 9 miles by road, and it opens in the first week of November. Edinburgh is the next nearest major market at about 46 miles, running from 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027.
That depends on your numbers. Our fleet includes a 19 seat midi coach for smaller groups, 53 and 55 seat coaches for medium and larger groups, and a 74 seat coach for the biggest parties. Most close before Christmas. Birmingham finishes on 24 December, Newcastle on 23 December, Manchester’s main markets on 22 December and York on 21 December.
